First Chapter of 'Manifest Vampire'

Read on! Below is the first chapter from the first book, "Carmella Jackson: Manifest Vampire."

------------

The Beginning

Carmella woke in her bed to find herself being suffocated. A scream died, trapped in her throat, unable to escape. There was a powerful hand pressing down on her mouth, and the rest of her body was pinned down by a huge mass. She twisted and turned, trying to escape, wrenching her body to get away from this thing. Was it a man? No, it was larger, covered in long hair, and the stench made bile work itself up her throat. It was a smell of death, and decay, and she couldn't bear to breathe it in. The hands on her body twisted her head to the side to bare her neck, and she was powerless to stop it. How could her parents not hear her struggling? She tried to scream all the harder, but it was useless. In the blackness of her bedroom all she could see was the indistinct and massive form on top of her, but also two eyes that burned with a fire from within. They were like two red-hot pokers pulled from the forges of the earth, and when they locked on hers she was more terrified than at any time in her young life. These eyes burned at her, and she was more scared because they were not just savage untamed eyes, but there was intelligence within them. She struggled, twisting and turning, but the weight of the body kept her locked against her bed. As every second ticked by, the terror grew in her chest. Ultimately she squeezed her eyes shut, breaking the contact.
Behind her closed eyes, she had the fleeting thought that this might be a dream. It must be, it couldn't be real, except that her body told her that the menace that locked her immobile on her bed had real weight, real hair, and the hands upon her were squeezing hard with real pain. These sensations were not imagined. She knew she could never have imagined the horror upon her right now.
The mouth of this creature found the soft skin of her young neck. She felt the hot breath of the creature upon her just before its lips pressed upon her neck, and then there was sudden pain as two long upper canines bit through the supple skin just above her clavicle. Her young back arched at the bite. The pain of the bite pushed her mind to the limit, and profound disbelief at her situation cleared out every other thought. As the creature’s teeth plucked themselves out, there was burning, searing fire from every vein in her body.
The attack, the bite, and the sudden loss of blood were too much to bear. Just when she thought she would succumb to the hulk that was pinning her down, agony wracked her body and kept her awake. But just as suddenly as the attack had begun, the deathly black form was gone through the open window, and her mind mercifully shut down as her body went into shock.

We've pushed the ebook release back to July 1st to make a few more edits prior to releasing the ebook version, and the printed version is expected to be released around August 1st of 2009.

Why is blood sexy?

Why is blood sexy? Every time we think about vampires, the image of blood immediately comes to mind. Vampire lips fastened upon a hapless neck, the very life force of its victim being drained. It is surrender, it is the release of control. Typically the victim is a woman. Is blood sexy because it is a literary substitute for intercourse? Seems like an easy association.

Which leads us to why do women feel that their job is to relinquish control? The vampires' victim is possibly the ideal of the self image of women. With every scene of a vampiric attack, we typically feel the heightened sense of expectation. It is iconic, it is powerful. The power inherent in the image is possibly the deepest we can image, for it is the victim giving complete control over to the vampire. One's life is held in the balance. To do so, is to give complete trust to someone.

Powerful stuff, and there is nothing more integral to life in our minds than blood itself. Life, blood, sex, trust, surrender. Is blood sexy? Ask yourself what is your definition of love, and you can answer the question yourself.

A brief historic view of vampires

Vampires have had many forms over the centuries. Even as far back as the 12th century there were cries of vampirism all over Christian dominated Europe. There were reports of people coming back from the dead to feast upon and kill the living. Remember, this was a time of little education, and people were quick to assign some supernatural explanation to all things they didn't understand. It also probably helped keep the children in line.

The idea of vampirism, as we have come to know it, began to gel in the 1700's as reports of bodies that continued to show signs of life after death were reported in the field journals of military surgeons. Also, the discovery of bats that lived on the blood of animals came about in this time period. Europeans were quick to associate the two and the concept of the modern day vampire was born. The term vampire is thought to be an anglicization of Serbian or Russian words refering to bloodsuckers or werewolves.

From the 1700's to the early 20th century, the perception of vampires defined themselves into our common conception. That is, an undead human, usually with a Slavic accent, who shuns the light, preys upon people during the night, requires blood to subsist on, and is deadly allergic to the sight of religious symbols. Or garlic.

Since the mid 20th century, many aspects of the vampire motif have changed, with Anne Rice's 'The Vampire Lestat,' and most recently with the Twilight series. Curiously, a thing to be feared and shunned has become an object of desire. Is it possible that vampires have become our alter ego, an icon upon which to lay our desires and dark urges?

Stay tuned for further articles exploring the history of the vampire.

The Fountain of Youth in St Augustine

The Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine, Florida, is at the heart of the oldest city in America. Ponce de Leon landed here in 1513 and claimed it for Spain. He was chasing the one of the oldest myths in the world, the fabled Fountain of Youth. Certainly, he never found it although it was believed that a freshwater spring that was there had the mystical powers he sought. He left the area to the local people, and it was much later that Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles arrived and turned the area into a bustling city, current day St. Augustine.

Everyone should make at least one trip to this city, with it's beautiful architecture and vibrant local culture. You won't want to leave. And of course, you should spend a day at the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park. Drink the water.... who knows?

You can visit the official website of the Fountain of Youth park here:

Just who are the men in black?

The men in black, summer blockbuster films aside, have been seen for a long time in popular US culture. They always seem to show up at the oddest of events, and everyone assumes they are some form of the government, be it CIA or FBI. Spooks, anyone?

Yet, no one ever really knows where they are from or who they do represent. I mean, what's up with the dark glasses, talking into the cuff links, and expressionless faces. Are they really human at all?

Next time you're next to a pile of debris that just fell from the sky, be sure to ask one of these fine gentlemen to show you their driver's license.....

What is the skunk ape?

The Skunk Ape is a creature believed to be seen around the swamps of the states surrounding the Gulf Coast. There is a famous case of a lady taking a photo of an animal, probably an oranguatan, picking oranges from her tree. There is also a snapshot of a large hairy animal walking through the marsh lands.

Does it exist? Is it the Sasquash of the South? Is it somehow a primate that has remained undiscovered for millenia?

You decide.
